<itunes:subtitle>Part three of the Called By Name series: Jesus calls the disciples to follow him—not all at once, but through relationship that leads to mission. What nets is he asking you to drop?</itunes:subtitle>

<description>In Part 3 of the Called By Name series, Fr. Will reflects on the call of the first disciples in Matthew 4. While the Gospel can make it seem like the disciples followed Jesus instantly, the wider witness of Scripture shows that Jesus had already been drawing them into relationship over time.
This homily explores vocation as a twofold call: first into relationship—“Come after me”—and then into mission—“I will make you fishers of men.” Every baptized person shares in the universal call to holiness, while each of us also receives a particular vocation, most often lived through marriage, priesthood, or consecrated life.
The challenge is simple but demanding: like the disciples, we are asked to drop our nets, to let go of what we think will make us happy, and to trust that Jesus truly knows the way to our flourishing.

<itunes:subtitle>This homily begins a three-part series titled Called by Name, preached on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Fr. Will Rooney reflects on how our mission in life flows not first from what we do for God, but from who we are in relationship with Him. Drawing on the witness of St. Louis IX and the Gospel account of Jesus’ baptism, this reflection explores how baptism establishes us as beloved sons and daughters, invited into Christ’s own relationship with the Father—a relationship that becomes the foundation for identity, prayer, and mission. </itunes:subtitle>

<description>This homily marks the beginning of a three-part series, Called by Name: Relationship, Identity, and Mission, preached on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. In this first reflection, Fr. Will Rooney focuses on the foundational truth that our Christian mission flows from relationship with God, not mere activity.
Drawing on the life of St. Louis IX and the Gospel account of Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan, the homily explores how identity is revealed through relationship. Before Jesus begins His public ministry, the Father reveals Him as His beloved Son. This relationship—lived in prayer, trust, and communion—is the source of everything Jesus does.
Through baptism, we are invited to share in Christ’s own relationship with the Father, becoming beloved sons and daughters in the Son. This reflection challenges listeners to examine whether their lives are rooted in that relationship and to rediscover prayer, the sacraments, and intimacy with God as the true foundation for any authentic Christian mission.

<itunes:subtitle>This homily concludes a Christmas–Epiphany series on the family by reflecting on the Feast of the Epiphany and the mission entrusted to every Christian family. Preached by Fr. Will Rooney, this reflection draws on the visit of the Magi to show how Christ chooses to reveal Himself—and change lives—through the witness of a family. Just as Jesus was manifested to the nations through the Holy Family, so every family is called to become an epiphany: a living sign of God’s grace that educates, empowers, and evangelizes through prayer, sacrifice, and love. </itunes:subtitle>

<description>This homily is the final reflection in a three-part Christmas–Epiphany series on the family. Celebrated on the Feast of the Epiphany and preached by Fr. Will Rooney, it focuses on the mission of the family as God’s chosen instrument for making Christ known to the world.
Reflecting on the visit of the Magi, this homily highlights how Jesus chose to manifest Himself not in power or prestige, but within the simplicity of the Holy Family. Their encounter with Christ changes them—and reveals a lasting truth: God continues to evangelize the world through families who welcome Him into their homes. Every family, despite its imperfections, is called to become an epiphany—a visible manifestation of Christ’s light that draws others to Him.
Fr. Will explores how families live this mission concretely by first being evangelized themselves, by forming communities of prayer and sacrificial love, and by allowing the grace of Christ to shape daily life. Through small, faithful practices—praying together, blessing the home, building relationships with neighbors—families become domestic churches where Christ’s light shines outward to the world.
This final homily completes the series by uniting the roles of fatherhood and motherhood with their shared purpose: to educate, empower, and evangelize, so that every nation may come to adore the Lord.

<itunes:subtitle>Friends, in our own way, we have all been in this situation where hope seems to fade away. God is seemingly silent during human suffering and misery. On a grand worldwide scale, and on the small personal scale – we all experience the four days of the tomb. God is not in fact, absent but sometimes he works silently. God so loves us brothers and sisters that he refuses to let death have the last say. God so loves us that he sends his only beloved Son, to die for us and rise from the dead, that all who believe in him might have eternal life. He dies to prove to us how much God loves us. Jesus comes not simply to heal us a little bit, but to raise the dead to new life.</itunes:subtitle>

<itunes:subtitle>To live with the knowledge of having encountered Christ means that we realize the immensity of the task before us, because we like the blind man cannot stay silent. Part of the man’s healing was to walk through the city with mud on his eyes, and then to return healed so that all could see him. And immediately, people begin to question him. So also, as people will inevitably question any Christian with the courage to live according to the new law of Christ. If we are willing to live according to the new law of grace, we will draw many people to also encounter him. </itunes:subtitle>

<itunes:subtitle>Heaven – unending communion with God – that is what you are made for. We ought to long to hear those words; come blest of my Father and enter into the kingdom prepared for you. Jesus gives us a very clear measure today of what is necessary to in communion with him. The measure of whether you are whether you are ready for heaven is to consider whether you are ready to do as he does – to lay down your life for the least of these. If we refuse communion with Christ in those around us, we cannot hope to be with him in glory. Yet the opposite is also true, if we love like him, we will reign in glory with Him in the communion of the Spirit to the Glory of God the Father! </itunes:subtitle>

<itunes:subtitle>We don't like to admit that Hell is a reality - it makes us uncomfortable to think about. Yet, Jesus speaks often speaks of it. No one goes to Hell accidently, and “God predestines no one to go to hell; for this, a willful turning away from God (a mortal sin) is necessary, and persistence in it until the end." God loves us so much that he gives us the freedom to choose against loving him. But we can always choose to return to him, while we live there is hope. Turn to the Lord and be saved!

<itunes:subtitle>These are the conditions for each of us to win at the game of life. If we wish to enter and share the joy of the wedding feast, we must live so as to love God above all things and our neighbor for God’s sake. This is what Jesus means when he says stay awake! Stay awake to the fact you will die, and that heaven awaits you, if only you choose it. “Every action of yours, every thought, should be those of one who expects to die before the day is out. Death would have no great terrors for you if you had a quiet conscience.… Then why not keep clear of sin instead of running away from death? If you aren’t fit to face death today, it’s very unlikely you will be tomorrow”.… Imitation of Christ 1.23.1

<description>St. John Paul II said "Man cannot live without love. He remains a being that is incomprehensible for himself, his life is senseless, if love is not revealed to him, if he does not encounter love, if he does not experience it and make it his own, if he does not participate intimately in it. This, as has already been said, is why Christ the Redeemer "fully reveals man to himself"." <itunes:subtitle>"Give...to God what belongs to God." (Mt 22:21) Jesus tells us today give to Cesar what is Cesar’s but to God what is God’s. He invites us to justice at every level. He responds to this fundamental need for justice by going to its root. Have we allowed ourselves to be convicted by the Holy Spirit of our sins and failures so that we can know the surpassing love and mercy of a savior who not only comes not to give us the appearance of justice but rather what our hearts desire: to be just? </itunes:subtitle>

How will you and I respond to his invitation to joy? Today, we are faced with the stark realization that perfect joy is possible, but that we have to choose to receive it. That is the question laid before us today. </itunes:subtitle>

<itunes:subtitle>Our false image of God can get in the way of completely receiving his mercy. When that happens often desperately grasp after other things in order to try and earn our way to heaven. This grasping, which is sin, harms us and harms others. <description>Questions for us to ponder:
1. When am I most defensive? When defnsivness occurs what need am I seeking to fufill? How can I relate it to God?
2. How do I view God? In what areas of my life to forget that he is our Father and treat him more like a tyrant? What lies do I believe about myself and about him? What is the truth opposed to these lies? Have I allowed any false images to influence my behavior?
3. Do I go to God, Our Father, each day in prayer? How do I approach him in prayer? Do I ask him for holy indifference flowing from my trust in him?

Questions for us to ponder:
1. Have I given into the relativism of our cultural situation?
2. When it is necessary to correct another how well does my approach align with Jesus’s call to charitable fraternal correction?
3. Do I shy away too much from conflict when I should speak to a brother or sister? Or do I, on the other hand, concern myself with things that are not my business to correct? What am I doing to work to foster charity?
4. Do I engage in gossip, either in person or online? If so what am I doing to overcome this sin in my life?

<description>If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. (Mt 16:24)
The Prophet Jeremiah is in anguish because the words of the Lord, which could be instruments of salvation if heeded, fall on deaf ears and hardened hearts. Peter echoes Jeremiah’s anguish today. He rejects the Cross. He does not want the anguish of witnessing his friend fail. We should remember that this is often our human reaction as well. But this is not the end of Peter’s journey; Peter learns to think according to the will of God and literally takes up his cross dying in imitation of him. Brothers and Sisters, the cost of discipleship is high; in fact, to follow Jesus means to imitate him: where the Master goes, the disciple follows. This means we must be willing to accept the Cross in our lives; we must accept the anguish of failing in integrity. But it is precisely from this anguish of having failed in every human sense of the word, that testimony is given. The folly of the Cross becomes the salvation of all. Brothers and sisters, to share in his anguished heart which beats for every human soul. What greater joy could be found?
Questions for us to ponder:
1. What/where have I encountered the Cross in my life? Where do I encounter failure from a human perspective? How has God used that failure to bear witness to the hope we should have in him?
2. Where or to whom am I called to be a prophet of hope today?
3. What sinful habits or tendencies do I tend to use to avoid the Cross in my life?

  <description>Summary
For her benefit and for our benefit, the Lord draws faith out of the Canaanite woman. She becomes a remarkable example of what trusting prayer in faith looks like: Faith which is prompted by God coming to meet us first; Faith which does not deny our own needs while at the same time being compassionate towards others; faith that is persistent in asking for what we need and what others need; faith that asks for intercession from others; faith that is, above all else, humble, which recognizes with gratitude the gift God gives us. For when we desire in prayer, nothing other than the will of God, then it will be done in our lives.
Questions to Ponder
When have you experienced silence from God? How have you reacted to God's seeming silence?
How might God be working in your life to greater faith right now?
What are areas of your life in which it is difficult to trust the Lord? What "harsh words" might the Lord use to rouse your faith?
Who can you ask to pray for your intercessions today? Who can you pray for? (go do it, now!)

For when we desire in prayer, nothing other than the will of God, then it will be done in our lives.</p>

<h3>Questions to Ponder</h3>

<ol>
<li> When have you experienced silence from God? How have you reacted to God&#39;s seeming silence? </li>
<li> How might God be working in your life to greater faith right now? </li>
<li> What are areas of your life in which it is difficult to trust the Lord? What &quot;harsh words&quot; might the Lord use to rouse your faith? </li>
<li> Who can you ask to pray for your intercessions today? Who can you pray for? (go do it, now!) </li>

<itunes:subtitle>The infant Jesus lying in the manger reveals God. When he smiles, God smiles. When he cries, God cries. When he grasps the finger of Mary or Joseph or a shepherd, it is God grasping the human hand. The delightful and defenseless infant Jesus gently demands something from us. The child of Bethlehem gently invites us to love him…and responding to that invitation love means changing our lives.</itunes:subtitle>
